Northwest Dental Residency
offers a one-year residency beginning the first part of July. You will be part of busy, challenging practices that serve people living in the Washington State communities of Spokane, Yakima, Toppenish and Grandview.

You will work with an energetic faculty consisting of general-practice dentists and specialists, gaining experience in endodontics, periodontics, oral medicine, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, sedation techniques, restorative dentistry and oral surgery.

Our residents are exposed to a variety of patients, including those who are medically compromised, phobic patients, and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Along with practicing in an established dental clinic, each resident will spend a rotation in an HIV+/AIDS clinic and in a facility caring for developmentally delayed adults. You’ll also have a one-week rotation on a mobile dental clinic that travels to rural agricultural areas in Washington. Plus, you will attend regular didactic sessions that focus on building your practice management skills.

AEGD Program Goals and Objectives
• Provide residents with the necessary didactic and clinical experience that will enable them to provide comprehensive dental care to the broadest possible spectrum of the population, and to care for special patient groups such as children, adults, those who are immuno-compromised, special-needs patients, geriatric patients, and the financially challenged.

• Enhance the understanding of, and provide experience in, public health and private practice administration, including experience in working with a staff in a multi-operatory environment.

• Provide residents with an understanding of practicing in rural communities, with an emphasis on public health, cultural competency and multidisciplinary health issues.

• Provide residents with training in quality assurance protocols, ethics and risk management techniques.

• Enhance the resident's ability to make sound clinical judgments in arriving at a diagnosis and treatment plan, making decisions during the course of treatment and assessing post-treatment outcomes.

• Enhance the resident's ability to provide treatment using dental auxiliaries in an expanded-duty capacity (dental hygienists and dental assistants).

Rotations
Pediatric Dental Rotation
This rotation is designed to be a comprehensive pediatric dental rotation. All aspects of pediatric dental care are covered, including treatment planning, emergency care, restorative care, pulp treatment, behavior management and space maintenance.

Residents rotate through our Children's Village in Yakima. This clinic is devoted to treating children with special needs.

Practice Management Rotation
This rotation is intended to teach the resident practice management skills and working in multi-operator environment.

Oral Surgery Rotation
Residents will learn a variety of oral surgery services including: extractions of both erupted and impacted teeth, flap procedures, I&Ds and implants.

New Hope Clinic (HIV+/AIDS)
The New Hope Clinic in Yakima is a Ryan White-funded clinic that specializes in the treatment of HIV+/AIDS patients. This rotation is intended to give the resident the medical perspective of treating these patients. Residents follow the New Hope medical staff as they diagnose and treat the various medical issues and complications, gaining an understanding of how a patient’s medical status affects dental treatment and treatment planning.

Dentistry for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
This rotation provides residents the necessary training to treat adults with developmental disabilities. The resident will gain a better understanding of the adult in the DD community and the various dental issues involved.

Mobile Dentistry
The Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic operates two mobile dental clinics that provide emergent and urgent dental care throughout Eastern Washington. Residents will provide services on the dental unit under the direction of Howard Blessing, DDS, MPH. Along with teaching the intricacies of mobile dentistry, this rotation gives residents a better understanding of public health issues and demonstrates how to conduct a community oral health survey and community sealant program.
